An exhibition of individual and collaborative pieces.
Wendy and Lucy co-manage a social enterprise company, What If We Create, which delivers print-based community arts projects within North and Northeast Lincolnshire to adults and children, with a focus on sustainable, collective working. Inspired by their geographical location. Their new project Eastscape is the first time they have brought together their individual art practices.
Wendy Chan, an artist renowned for her hand-felted, screen-printed wall hangings, has honed her skills in a manner reminiscent of her magpies—collecting and layering textiles, prints, and paper to create abstract compositions. Her art practice is deeply rooted in community engagement, drawing inspiration from the places and environments she encounters.
She combines hand-felted fabrics with screen printing to produce unique wall hangings that are both visually striking and tactile. Her art reflects her surroundings, capturing the essence of various places and the stories they hold.
As a socially engaged practitioner, Wendy's work often involves collaboration with communities, schools, and regional arts initiatives. She uses her art to foster connections and encourage creativity among diverse groups.
Wendy has been a Studio Artist at The Ropewalk since the beginning, conducting workshops regionally in schools and communities. A recent collaboration with Lucy, a fellow printmaker and studio artist, has evolved into a partnership that expands both of their love for print. This exhibition offers an opportunity to explore their creative possibilities!
The Humber Printmaker is Lucy Frejiszyn Hanson; a printmaker, artist, and teacher of Art & Design with a passion for preserving traditional printmaking processes. Based in Lincolnshire, she started her small business back in 2020 with a focus on creating letterpress prints inspired by the area she calls home, combining local landmarks with an eclectic mix of words. Lucy continues to experiment with different techniques and processes, applying them to the prints and printed goods she creates. Fascinated by the history and social context of letterpress, she is also an avid collector of vintage presses and type.
Lucy works from her studio at The Ropewalk, where she enjoys being part of the vibrant and varied local creative community. Ultimately, she is driven by the anticipation of joy printmaking brings, whether it’s creating her own prints or assisting others with theirs.
