From her pottery based in Derby, Mary makes wheel thrown, slip decorated earthenware ceramics with traditional country pottery influences. Living in an urban environment her relationship with the earth can often feel distant and so her pots reflect this complicated situation. Mary applies decoration and images based on her drawings and paintings of cluttered back gardens and allotments of the city to her pots. Working with red earthenware clay she uses a mixture of traditional slip decoration, sgraffito or training, sprigs and mono printing, ceramic pencil and under glaze washes dependant on the image.
