John Wheeldon has been making pots for over 50 years and during that time has investigated many different aspects of the craft including domestic stoneware, lustreware, Raku and more recently earthenware tableware. John was asked to develop a small body of work for a museum based on historic pieces from their collection. He found a Dutch 18th century flower brick in the gallery storerooms which developed into an exploration of pots for the display of flowers and plants.
John was born in the Derbyshire Dales, where he still lives and has deep roots in the area. He is influenced by the area’s past and the beginnings of industrial ceramics – pioneers such as Josiah Wedgewood, Thomas Whieldon and William Greatbach.
